The Devil Upright Meaning
The Devil is the thing you keep doing that you have already decided to stop. A habit, a dynamic, a job, a person — something with a genuine pull that is costing more than it returns. The card is not moralistic about this. The pull is real, the pleasure is real, and pretending otherwise is why the pattern survives. What makes it the Devil is not the desire but the sense of having no choice, which is almost always false and almost always feels true. What it costs to face this is the story that you are trapped. Look closely and you will usually find the constraint is one you are maintaining, for reasons that made sense once.
