Four of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning

Holding tight to what you have, which is sensible right up until it is not.

  • holding on
  • security
  • control
  • scarcity
  • conservatism

Four of Pentacles Upright Meaning

The Four of Pentacles is the grip. Saving, conserving, keeping control of money or a position or a relationship because losing it would be unbearable. Often this is entirely rational — people who have been without something hold it tightly, and that is learned rather than greedy. When it appears, security is being prioritised over everything else. What it costs is movement and generosity. Nothing new gets in while everything is being held, and a closed hand cannot take an offer. Work out whether you are protecting a real vulnerability or a remembered one. The first deserves the grip. The second is charging you rent.

Four of Pentacles Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the grip changes. Loosening — spending, giving, taking a risk, letting go of the thing you were clenching — or tightening past reason into genuine scarcity thinking. It can also be loss of control over resources, or the recognition that hoarding has cost you people. Open the hand slightly and see what happens. It is rarely as dangerous as the holding implied.

Four of Pentacles in Love

In love, holding on too tightly, or keeping emotional reserves back so you can never be caught out. Control is not safety, and the other person can feel the difference.

Four of Pentacles in Career & Work

At work, protecting your position, your budget, your information. Prudent in a lean year and limiting in a good one. Check which one you are actually in.

Is Four of Pentacles a Yes or No Card?

No

Not really — the impulse here is to hold rather than to move, and this question wants movement.
